The Most Wonderful Time of Year!

My favorite holiday? Thanksgiving!

I love this time of year, I love the holiday season, and by far my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. The reason why is has remained the same, since I was a kid: I spend time with my favorite people in one of my favorite places. My son and I go to spend time with our cousins in New Hampshire; it was my tradition when I was a kid, and I’ve had the good fortune to be able to continue it with my son. Over 30 people who all care about each other in one place on Thanksgiving, every year, with all the accouterments

I love traditions, and Thanksgiving day is full of them.

We do a Turkey Trot 5-K, help a charitable meal delivery with the local Rotary Club, eat tons and play an epic football game. I’ve got a couple of personal traditions, too. One of them is I fall asleep somewhere by about 5:30 on Thanksgiving day. Another tradition I have is I watch the greatest Thanksgiving TV episode – WKRP In Cincinnati and their “Turkeys Away!” episode. Who doesn’t know this comedic tour de force? Its the story of the hapless radio station owner who puts together what’s supposed to be a major promotion to help the struggling WKRP and the results go horribly, tragically, and comically awry:

From the beginning to the end, this episode is hilarious. How can you not love Mr. Carlson and “five-time winner of the Buckeye Newshawk Award” Les Nessman? The scenes with the staff in the DJ booth are brilliant – Venus Flytrap, Andy Travis, Bailey Quarters and the irrepressible Dr. Johnny Fever – they don’t know whether to laugh or cry with horror. And of course, there’s Johnny’s droll line as the live remote cuts off: “Thanks for the on-the-spot report, Les.” I still love it, and the episode still holds up, forty years later. Accordingly, this episode is based on true events – at least one radio station out there tried something similar.
