FEELING MEH! on a rainy Monday night, in a hotel outside of Boston; I could watch Ozark on Netflix, or any number of comedians’ specials I’ve been meaning to check out. Instead, when this was next up on HBO, after wondering if I had seen it before, I then wondered, “why not?”
I thought About A Boy was going to be a predictable Brit romantic comedy, but there’s more depth here than I thought. I thought Hugh Grant was going to play the typical Lothario, but his character learns what means the most to him, becoming closer to a 12-year old boy, Marcus (who he meets via a great ruse to meet women). I especially loved Toni Collette as Fiona, Marcus’s mom, who suffers from depression. Sure it’s predictable, but it’s funny, touching and also perfect for a meh Monday night. Great soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy, too.
