Happy Birthday, Roy Wood – Eccentric, Influential UK Musician is 69 Today

8 Nov

ONE OF THE MOST innovative, eclectic, weird, eccentric and above all else, talented, pop rock musicians ever, Roy Wood,is 70 69 years old today.

Stateside, if you know of him at all its because he founded E.L.O. with Jeff Lynne; prior to that he had 15 singles in the UK top 10 between 1967 and 1974. His band The Move was hugely influential-especially on my favorite  band, Cheap Trick, who copped numerous riffs on their first three albums as well as covering The Move’s last hit, “California Man” on their third album, Heaven Tonight.

Wood’s life and career is incredibly interesting; he’s also a recluse and has not released new music in 29 years. This feature today from the Guardian UK is a worthwhile read about Wood’s life and times:
