VEEP Premieres This Sunday on HBO

I AM SO PSYCHED because my favorite show VEEP comes back for season 5 on HBO this Sunday. If you don’t know, Veep stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer, former U.S. Senator who becomes Vice President. The job is a disappointment for Meyer who is left out of the President’s inner circle and decision making (in fact, you never actually see the President in any episode).  Veep follows Meyer and her staff, a bunch of political hacks and suck-ups who all there to  basically make Meyer look good, amidst the chaos.

Like the best situation comedies, the entire cast stands out; each and every one are hysterical.  They each have their own agendas it seems, and are more than willing to throw each other under a bus if need be.  Former Senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. Veep follows Meyer and her staff as they attempt to make their mark and leave a lasting legacy, without getting tripped up in the day-to-day political games that define Washington.

In addition to all that, Veep stands out for me because I’ve never seen a show that uses swear words so effectively, so humorously, and so often. The insults fly fast and hysterically, especially from Selina, here’s a favorite: “Jesus Christ, you know? You do your best, you try to serve the people, and they just fuck you over. You know why? Because they’re ignorant, and dumb as shit, and that’s democracy.”

So awesome. Here’s a greatest hits of great Veep insults:

Season 5 premieres this Sunday on HBO. Meyer ran for president last season and season 4 ended on election night, with Meyer in a complete rollercoaster cliffhanger – she’s going to win, no wait, she’s going to lose, but wait! She wins Pennsylvania and she’s back in it, and if she wins Virginia the election will be tied…and she does! Season 5 picks up from there, with various member of her staff losing their minds, worried about their jobs and possible indictments as they try and figure out how the election is going to play out in an electoral vote tie.

Who knows where season 5 will go. The obvious would be Selina wins and becomes President, but the writers are so creative I can see them developing a whole season around Selina and her staff leaving office prior to Inauguration Day. The show is that good. I can’t wait.
