There’s a great blog post this morning at The Same Rowdy Crowd that really sums up why I don’t watch coaches’ press conferences in football: because they don’t say ANYTHING! “Well, they played hard, we have a lot of work to do, looked good in practice, downfield execution, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH…” The post really goes in depth on why, in a control-the-message, sanitized for mass consumption PR world this is the norm and how that affects TV news, among other things.
So as an example, the blog offers up a sample of when football coaches didn’t have PR handlers and wouldn’t get a memo from the front office to turn it down a bit. I didn’t live in Minnesota back when Jerry Burns was the coach but this is pure GOLD
And this was after a victory!
I’ve got to find a great You Tube compilation of the best coaches’ rants – I miss when the likes of Bill Parcells, Marv Levy, Mike Ditka and of course, Jim “Playoffs?” Mora would go off on the reporters asinine questions.
